Lewis Brander’s paintings develop through a prolonged process of observation, layering and revision. Working from direct experience of landscape, weather and light, he creates images that move between representation and abstraction. Recent works draw on the skies, waterways and green spaces of London, where shifting atmospheres are translated into fields of colour and form. Through an engagement with historical painting techniques and material processes, Brander builds surfaces that register time, memory and change, allowing images to emerge gradually through successive layers of paint.

Writing in ArtReview, Tom Morton observed: “At his best, Brander employs landscape as a method of drawing disparate moments – even histories – together into a single image. What he paints is not only space, but also time.”
